TEACHERS THAT SUFFERED THROUGH ≥ 1 SIBLING/GEN

NOT “HASSLE,” BUT…

NOT “HARRY,” BUT…

NOT “100 PENNIES,” BUT 1…

NOT “DONE,” BUT…

Mr. Haskell (NOT HASSLE) taught math at NKHS starting there in 1966. He was still there when I graduated in the late 70s (I had him for at least one year of algebra). I believe Norma and Karen both had him for algebra or geometry.

Mr. Henry (NOT HARRY) started teaching various science classes at NKHS in the mid 70s. I was never in any of his classes but I believe both Sarah and Mike were. Anyone else?

Mr. Dollar (NOT 100 PENNIES) started at NKHS in the late 60s and was still there up until at least the late 70s. He taught in the Industrial Arts Department. I assume multiple boys in the family were in his classes.

Mr. Dunne (NOT DONE) taught at NKHS for many years in the English Department. I was in his English class one year and I think some of my older siblings may have been in his class at some point. Additionally, I believe Sarah may have been a student of his. Maybe not, maybe he was still at the high school but she did not have him as a teacher.

I liked Mr. Dunne, he was not my all-time-favorite teacher, but I liked him. I remember his standard cry of delight – “hark, hark, a lark” when someone spoke up in class with any sort of valid input. I think this picture of him with his pipe is kind of funny. In looking for a photo of him to use, I found many that included his pipe – I wasn’t even aware it was a “thing” with him.

There were a few other names that crossed my mind for this grouping: Cantileno and Cranston (both girl’s PE). Higby of course, for music. Crescendo (science) and Cruise (math, I think). But I couldn’t make good clues with their names…well, there were a few in the works but they didn’t get to the finish line.

If you go back before high school, I know I was in fourth grade for the last year that Mrs. Spring taught. I believe she earlier had Bob in her classroom. And I absolutely remember Mr. Toro (Davisville Jr High – music) asking me “how more of ‘you’ are there?”

Anyone have others that they know of?

I’m adding a few random school pictures here for fun. Can you identify them?

ROADS GIL AND/OR CLAIRE LIVED ON

NOT “NEW CATHOLIC,” BUT

KATHARINE OR AUDREY

NOT “SHAFT DELL,” BUT…

NOT “CANYON OBSCURED,” BUT…

NOT “NEW CATHOLIC,” BUTOld Baptist Road – Gil and Claire bought the property on Old Baptist Road in September 1950 for $6800. Below is a few pictures of the location in it’s earlier years of occupation by the Hillman family.

KATHARINE OR AUDREYHepburn Street – Claire lived on Hepburn Street in West Warwick while growing up. The Cummiskey family did not make the move to Bellville in North Kingstown until after she had finished high school.

NOT “SHAFT DELL,” BUT.. Tower Hill Road – Claire’s family moved to Tower Hill Road in North Kingstown from West Warwick.

NOT “CANYON OBSCURED,” BUTMount View Avenue – Before buying property on Old Baptist Road, Claire and Gil lived on Mount View Avenue also in North Kingstown.

Other roads I could have used: Gil grew up in Usquepaugh on Old Usquepaugh Road. When he attended trade school in Providence he lived with and aunt and uncle near Roger Williams Park. I believe this aunt and uncle were his mother’s brother and his wife but that collection of Leas is still a jumble for me (Irma, David, Edgar, Harry, Emma) – I have yet to figure out who’s who. I have records for Leas on both Hamlin Street (one’s still there) and on Stamford Avenue in the neighborhood off of Elmwood Avenue just south of Roger Williams Park. Gil later lived on Milton Lane in Coventry.

Also, on the “not ‘New Catholic/Old Baptist’” clue. I acknowledge that “Catholic” and “Baptist” may not be as clear cut in opposition as “old” and “new” and I did try a few other things in place of “Catholic” (apostate and Pentecostal, for example) but in the end felt “Catholic” worked best for my purposes.

WATERPARKS WE’VE VISITED

NOT “ADJACENT TO FLOWING H2O,” BUT…

NOT “SEIS WAVING BANNERS,” BUT…

NOT “MOVING AIR@NaCl H20 BDY,” BUT…

NOT “TURB H2O-SCARY EL RAILWY,” BUT…

NOT “ADJACENT TO FLOWING H2O,” BUT.. Riverside – I’m referring to Riverside, as in what Six Flags in Agawam, MA was before it was Six Flags. The cousins generation would have gone here and I’m willing to bet quite a few of them.

NOT “SEIS WAVING BANNERS,” BUT.. Six Flags – OK, so full disclosure, I only realized this morning that the waterpark located within Six Flags (Agawam, MA) has its own name – “Hurricane Harbor.” I had already worked up the “Seis Waving Banners” clue so I didn’t change it. So…who’s been there (as Six Flags/Hurricane Harbor)? I know I have been there with Catherine and I know Michaela’s been with Cecil. Anyone else?

Below is a photo of Cecil during a rainy visit in 2023.

NOT “MOVING AIR@NaCl H20 BDY,” BUTOcean Breeze – Ocean Breeze is a waterpark located in Virginia Beach, VA. My sister-in-law lived in Virginia Beach for a while in the late 80s. Jim and I visited with Jess, Matt, and Michaela. During our time there we visited the waterpark. I do believe “Ocean Breeze” is the name the park currently operates under. When we visited, it was most likely known as “Jungle Falls.”

NOT “TURB H2O-SCARY EL RAILWY” BUT.. Surf Coaster – Surf Coaster USA was a waterpark located at Weirs Beach, on Lake Winnipesaukee in Laconia, NH. The park opened in the mid 80s and closed permanently in 2006. According to Amber, she and her siblings visited this particular waterpark. Anyone else?

Kudos to anyone that got these. I had to go back to my reference notes to remind myself of the answers on at least one. The multiple names for the various locations complicated things. When I spoke to Amber about this, she only referred to the waterpark as the “Weirs Beach” one. I didn’t figure out the actual name of it until this morning.

Surprisingly, I didn’t collect a plethora of pictures to use here so instead I decided to use the image below – not taken at a waterpark but of the early/heydey period of the pool at The 461. Gil flippin’, Ann waitin’.

TRAVELED TO TENNESSEE FOR 2017 TOTAL ECLIPSE

GIL AND CLAIRE’S THIRD GRANDCHILD

BORN ON A SUNNY BEACH SUNDAY

BORN IN WEE HRS OF GRAY NOV DAY

CURRENT COLLEGE ATTENDEES

Sarah is GIL AND CLAIRE’s THIRD GRANDCHILD arriving after after Tom and Jen.

Nancy was BORN ON A SUNNY BEACH SUNDAY and the story goes that Gil, frustrated and anxious about beach traffic impeding the route to the hospital, crossed the center line to the empty northbound lanes (yikes!). He was stopped by a cop who quickly escorted them to the hospital (or so I’m told).

Michaela was BORN IN THE WEE HRS OF A GRAY NOVEMBER DAY. Others born in November are Mike, Lowell, and Chris. I have no knowledge/memory of what time of the day they were born.

Molly and Megan are the two CURRENT COLLEGE ATTENDEES in the family.

All travelled to Tennessee in 2017 for the total eclipse. Below are some photos from that trip. (First picture: Michaela makes adjustments to her telescope before the big event. Second picture: Sarah and Michaela do some scheduling and planning in the hotel room. Third picture: Molly looks out of the window of the AirBnB we had in VA on the trip down. Fourth picture: Megan gets a lesson in chopstick usage from Michaela)

  1. I got NONE! LOL I didn’t even have guesses and I knew that one of the clues was me and I still had no guesses! Hahahahahaha

Mr. Henry was my favorite teacher ever!!!! I also had Mr. Haskell and LOVED him!
I never had Mr. Dunn but he was there when I was there and then Megan was awarded a scholarship in his memory which was really cool!

    • I didn’t realize you had Mr. Haskell! I really like him too.
I had forgotten about Megan getting that scholarship! Go Meg!

  2. I got none! I knew who some of the individual clues were but couldn’t get any of the connections!
I had Haskell but did not like him. I think Dunne was there when I was there.
I really liked the aerial views of the 461 back in the day!
A bunch of us went to Riverside Park when the kids were little and then we went back when it was Six Flags.

  3. So I got none, but these were awesome! I figured my mom was the third grandchild and that I was a current college attendee but couldn’t figure out how they all went together.

I spot Muffin in the mix of school photos!

And omg the Tennessee photos! All I can think about is the Jack and Jill bathroom situation… Such a funny day!
