VEHICLES USED/ASSOCIATED WITH JOBS

FISHING BOAT

TRACTOR-TRAILER

ARTICULATED BUS

FIRETRUCK

Both Kevin and Jim have worked on FISHING BOATs, Chris drove TRACTOR-TRAILERs. Bill drove an ARTICULATED BUS for a short time in the service, and Adam, being a fireman, is familiar with FIRETRUCKs, even if others in the family continue to be confused by what is or is not a fire truck.*

*It is absolute happenstance that this grouping (with reference to a firetruck) is here this week. The puzzles have been roughed into a schedule for months.

DEHOFF GIFTS

GLOBE

BASKETBALL

BRUSH AND COMB SET

TRANSISTOR RADIO

For some period of time – and I’m curious to know if anyone remembers how long – the company Gil workded for (Dehoff, in Cranston) bought a Christmas present for each of the children of their employees.

I don’t know if there was a point that kids aged out, but I seem to remember Norma and Karen getting BRUSH AND COMB SETs when they were teenagers. I also remember getting a large free-standing chalkboard one year. Other gifts I think came from there were a GLOBE and a BASKETBALL. Does anyone remember details of what they may have received?

I know this became our Christmas Eve “thing” – we waiting ever so impatiently for dad to come home from “the shop” as we knew presents were coming with him and we were going to get to open the THAT NIGHT!

I definitely got this Raggedy Ann and Andy transistor radio for Christmas. I believe it was from DeHoff (if not, it was from my Godfather, Uncle Tommy/Joe).

_____ SWAMP OR
SWAMP _____ (SWAMPY THINGS)

GREAT

YANKEE

TOWN

FOURTH

I think GREAT SWAMP, SWAMP YANKEE, AND SWAMP CABBAGE can stand as they are without need of any further explanation. Some however, may need/want clarification on SWAMPTOWN. My understanding has always been that Swamptown is a somewhat nebulous geographic sub-section of Wickford but to verify I went to the writings of Mr. Swamptown, himself, Tim Cranston. According to his “View from Swamptown” column* of April 28, 2024 he defines Swamptown as “an ill-defined district in North Kingstown that can best be described as that wild swampy region between Lafayette, Allenton, and Slocum.” I think I may be more confused than when I started. He doesn’t mention Wickford specifically at all.

*This column appeared in The Independent and was Tim’s reflection on the 25th anniversary of the column. Here’s a link to a preview of the article for anyone interested:
