CHARLIE AND/OR KAY
Charlie was Claire’s brother.
JACK AND JILL ON ESCOHEAG HILL
So this information isn’t specifically about Charlie or Kay per se but rather about their house on Escoheag Hill Road in Exeter. I remember it had a Jack and Jill bathroom set-up. In case anyone is wondering just what a Jack and Jill bathroom is, quite simply it’s a bathroom sandwiched between two bedrooms with access from each of the bedrooms but not from a central hallway. I assume I remember this simply because of the novelty of it. Internet research says these bathrooms/this layout became popular in the 1970s but Charlie and Kay’s house was not of that era. I wonder if they remodeled to include it or if it was in fact original to the house.
HER LAUGH INDELIBLE, PLENTIFUL
The absolute one thing I will never forget about Aunt Kay is her laugh. I dare say it bordered on a cackle but I hesitate to describe that way because I feel cackle has a negative connotation and while her laugh at times may have been sly, a reaction to dry or even dark humor, it was never overtly negative. I loved her laugh, and it my memory, it was also indeed plentiful.
IN QUARTET-U DIDN’T KNOW I BET
The Stand-Times comes through again. I was somewhat aware of Charlie’s interest in music – he cornered me at my wedding reception asking for the alternate lyrics that were being sung to some American standards and I was vaguely aware of some involvement Charlie had with music at his church but the newspaper article below provides evidence that he was interested in music from an early age.

4 WRDS:HNGNG-SWING-COUCH-THING
I wish I had a picture. I’m going to have to check with Eileen to see if maybe she has one. Any of the siblings will surely remember the hanging couch swing at Charlie and Kay’s. I don’t think it was on a porch, I believe it was in their living room and maybe it was because I was little but it seemed to hang really high off the floor.
Below is a photo of Charlie and Kay’s house, I took the photo a couple of years ago. I am not sure if the house is still in the family. Note, I also remember the garage structure by the road but honestly thought the house was MUCH further away.
Second photo is of Charlie and Kay at a Cummiskey family reunion probably in the 1980s or early 90s.

DICK AND/OR CHRISTINE
Dick is Gil’s brother.
HIS SWAMP BOG IS USQUEPAUGH
I recently visited Aunt Christine, when talking about Dick and where he has lived during his life she motioned with her arms to indicate his “world triangle” – he’s lived in three places his whole life, all on Old Usquepaugh Road. Tell me you’re a Swamp Yankee without telling me you’re a Swamp Yankee!
NAME FRM DICKENS-RAISES CHCKNS
So Uncle Dick’s name is Charles Dickens Kenyon. I always assumed his name was chosen by his mother because she was a fan of the famous author. Turns out I’m only sort of correct. He was named after his grandfather but when I asked Christine if Dickens had been a family name she indicated that it hadn’t and she agreed with my suggestion that the parents of Charles Dickens Kenyon the first had probably been fans of Charles Dickens. Oh, and yes, he either currently raises chickens or has done so in the past.
ARR IN 46 NEW HOME IN THE STIX
Aunt Christine was born in England, at the age of 22 months she traveled on the Queen Mary with her mother. The two arrived in New York City on Easter Sunday 1946 to reunite with her father. Christine told me of her mother’s telling of their travel to from New York City where there were so many lights it was blinding through areas where lights became fewer and fewer all the way to Richmond, Rhode Island which was, to her, as remote as remote could be.
PROV, EB, THEN DIGGING 4 A FEE
I learned, again via conversation with Aunt Christine, that Dick worked for a while at Federal Products in Providence, then at EB in Groton (way back!) before starting his own septic/excavation business which he still operates at the age of 80-something.
Below is a photo from Dick and Christine’s wedding. When I look at Christine in this photo I realize her daughter Heidi looks just like her.

FOREIGN WORDS FOR AUNT
TANTE is the French word for aunt.
ZIA is the Italian word for aunt.
TIA is the Spanish word for aunt.
CHACHI AND MAMI are the Hindi words for aunt. Chachi for a paternal aunt and mami for a maternal aunt.
EILEEN AND/OR KEN
Eileen is Claire’s sister.
KID IS 57 OR 14 – SOME BIRTHDAYS UNSEEN
Ken and Eileen’s daughter Ann is a Leap Day baby having an actual birthday only once every 4 years. Her next birthday will be February 29, 2028 when she’ll celebrate her either her 60th or 15th birthday. I think she should have a huge quinceañera party.
SOUTH-TWR HILL-HPBURN, IN TURN
So yes, the order is reversed but Eileen lived on Hepburn Street (in West Warwick), Tower Hill Road in Belleville, and then South Road.
WORKED WITH CLAIRE SOMEWHERE
Eileen and Claire worked together but I can’t remember if it was at the Adult Correctional Institution or if it was at Ladd School. I feel someone looking at this will know and will comment.
OCCUPATION?DLVR2THE POPULATION
Ken worked for the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier. His son-in-law, Eddie and daughter, Ann, also worked/work the for USPS.
Below is a picture of Uncle Ken at The 461. I believe that is Karen in the background.
The second photo is one I absolutely love of Gil with Eileen in the yard in Belleville.
The third picture is a bonus of the Leap Day kid.

I did manage to get it but it did take a couple of tries. I knew three about Charlie and Kay right away but that 4th one took a while! I will always remember Aunt Kays laugh! not in a bad way just distinct.
I knew Eileen and Ken. Actually, I thought Mom and Eileen worked together at both ACI and Ladd School but Karen will have to confirm that. Maybe URI too?
It took me a minute to place where picture of Ken was shot. That’s a whole lot of wall paper there!
Thanks Nancy I really enjoy these puzzles! And i learn something new everytime!
And yes Heidi looks just like her Mom!
Always love the news articles and photos!
This took a couple of tries, getting out 2 or 3 times. I was tired and did this very late! I’m responding on the following day.
Kay’s laugh! Yes! Debbie had her laugh. I believe Cindy does too. But Kay’s was special.
And lastly we established at pizza night that in fact mom and Eileen worked together at Ladd and the ACI.
Don’t remember the Jack and Jill bathroom, but who doesn’t remember the swing! I believe it faced the fireplace. I got the bathroom because of Escoheag Hill. As a kid the house did seem further back. The singing i thought was Bob, so I was trying to make a Bob/Liz category. That made me want to assign the foreign words for aunt to individuals not realizing they all meant aunt, only knew Tia. Thank you Sesame Street. Of course I had forgotten tante despite more years than I care to remember of French in school, starting in 3rd grade.
Heidi does look like Christine! Did not know she was born in England! I’ve been to all three points of Dick’s triangle. Never knew he worked at EB. Did know he had his own business that involved something to do with construction equipment
Nice reply/response, Karen.
Yes, the couch swing faced the fireplace, I think.
I missed out on French being taught in elementary by a year I think. In fact I think one year started with it in the curriculum I believe – tags in French on things in the classroom but they were gone after only a few days.
