LUNCH ITEMS BEV LIKELY SERVED AT NKHS CAFETERIA

CHOCOLATE FUDGE CAKE W ICING

CHICKEN PATTIE ON ROLL

STEAMED BABY CARROT

WHIPPED POTATO

All of the above items appeared in the “school lunch menu” in the Standard-Times during years I believe Bev worked at the high school cafeteria.

DINNER @ THE 461 BK IN THE DAY

PORK AND BROWN POTATOES

FRANKS & BEANS, & BROWN BREAD

LIVER AND ONIONS

CAN CAN CHICKEN

Dinner at The 461 wasn’t usually a fancy affair. One typical dinners was PORK AND BROWN POTATOES. I believe Karen still makes some version of this recipe. I always thought the potatoes were too mushy. FRANKS & BEANS, & BROWN BREAD was a regular in the dinner rotation. I had this a few weeks ago (including the brown bread) for the first time in ages! Can Can Chicken was THE staple food of my childhood. I believe the only one that ever ate liver an onions was my mother. A seem to remember it smelled terrible.

TYPICAL SIBLING BIRTHDAY PARTY

CHOC CAKE WITH WHITE FROSTING

ROOT BEER FLOAT

GUESTS = WHOEVER WAS AROUND

GIFTS: WAIT, PEOPLE GET GIFTS?

Birthday celebrations, as I remember them, at The 461 consisted of chocolate cake with white frosting (CHOC CAKE WITH WHITE FROSTING), ROOT BEER FLOATs, and an assortment of siblings and neighborhood kids (GUESTS = WHOEVER WAS AROUND). Of course, having a summer birthday as I did, may have meant more guests than those with birthdays in other seasons may have had. I can’t say I remember presents being an integral part of birthday celebrations (off-key singing of Happy Birthday was to suffice). The exception would be that I remember for my 16th birthday I received a birthstone ring (purchased at Save-Rite) (GIFTS: WAIT, PEOPLE GET GIFTS?).

Below is a picture not of an actual family birthday cake, but rather a cake Bev offered up at a school bake sale. It appears to be signature Hillman birthday cake though – chocolate with white frosting! I would note a birthday cake would have complete frosting coverage however.

NICKNAMES

SPROUT

MUFFIN

RED

BEAN

At a young age Sarah was nicknamed “Sprout,” I believe by her dad. John is also responsible for Jan’s limited-use nickname of “Muffin.” Gil was known to many only as “Red.” Similarly, there are many people I have encountered who know Catherine only as “Bean.”

Do you know which of these nicknamed people appears in the photo below?
